Master your water governance.

If we keep using water the way we do today, the world is estimated to experience more and more water challenges and a severe water shortage by 2040.

Find out what you can do to prevent this.

Did You Know?

  • 70 percent of the earth’s surface is covered in water

  • 90 percent of that water is salt water.

  • Around the world, 2.1 billion people still lack access to safe water.

  • The average family can waste 180 gallons per week, or 9,400 gallons of water annually, from household leaks. That’s equivalent to the amount of water needed to wash more than 300 loads of laundry. Household leaks can waste approximately nearly 900 billion gallons of water annually nationwide.

  • Many governments and politicians struggle to make the long term investments needed in their water infrastructure as it is very tempting to postpone that to another day.

Small and big things you can do

What can I do?

You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars in order to make your water footprint smaller than it is now. Here are some small ways you can make it happen.

If you are in charge of water governance at a public infrastructure or system level, you are able to have a much broader impact.

In the Kitchen

Plug up the sink or use a wash a if washing dishes by hand. Use a dishwasher—and when you do, make sure it's fully loaded! Scrape your plate instead of rinsing it before loading it into the dishwasher. Keep a pitcher of drinking water in the refrigerator instead of letting the faucet run until the water is cool.

In the bathroom & Laundry Room

Turn off the tap while shaving or brushing teeth. Showers use less water than baths, as long as you keep an eye on how long you've been lathering up. Wash only full loads of laundry or use the appropriate water level or load size selection on the washing machine. To save money on your energy bills, set your washing machine to use cold water rather than hot or warm water.

In government services or public infrastructure

Ensure good governance of the water infrastructure with dedicated budgets, good oversight, limiting waste, fair distribution, and all the rest of it. Vote for the politician with the foresight to protect your future.
